FULL TONE REVERSAL

This young lady is a full tone reversal print. Full tone: all shades and tones in this case, black's, white's and grey's. Reversal: type of film and method of processing that yields a positive original. Film negative = print positive. You can use lith photographic paper to achieve this effect.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Here you are, another example of how the simple act of chemical toning can change and alter a monochrome photographic print. The top photograph is a straight forward monochrome print, the second and bottom print is one that was sepia toned. Toning changes the perspective of any photographic print, it also increases the overall tonal range of the print and both sepia and selenium toning gives it archival protection. In other words it will not fade like normal monochrome prints when subjected to sunlight for long periods of time.

The items depicted in this still-life study are a red rose, a British metal ammunition box, six 7.62mm dummy rounds and two postcards from the Peace Museum, Caen, Normandy, France. The sand is Builder's sand contained in a wooden frame that I constructed to represent the sands of the D-Day Beaches from WWII.

THREE CLOCKS

Another example of a multiple exposure shot (done in the camera). This was well known local clock on the exterior wall of a bank. What makes this shot work for me is the sunlight glinting on the metal surround (bottom right of the print).

SHADOWS ON THE SILL

Another photographic image from the same project as the rain drops on the window (12 January 2012). A long exposure reveals this slightly strange reflection on this white painted indoor window sill. I like the abstract nature, and the weird, almost surreal feeling of this image. An every day subject that suddenly implies a very sinister feeling.

RAIN DROPS

A street light shines through the dark and outlines the rain drops on a window in this very atmospheric shot. I like the brooding intensity of this image. It's very minimalist but it is also one of my all time favourite photographs that I have ever taken.

This is presented in a booklet, the first page is a clear acetate sheet which was produced in the following way: My own DPM British Army Combat Jacket was scanned on my flatbed scanner. Then having gained the actual service numbers of soldiers from my former Battalion who had fallen in the service of their country, their numbers were added in red. Then this was printed out.

The next stage saw a pure white piece of paper added behind this acetate sheet (to accentuate the jackets pattern and colours and the vivid red 8 or 5 figured service numbers). The flowers were photographed on monochrome film and then the finished print was selenium toned for a long period of time to give the finished desired effect. The print was then mounted in a green coloured card window mount.

The flowers are red roses, I printed them slightly darker than normal to add to the mood and atmosphere of the finished print and to be in line with the sombre nature of the assignment.

All Non-Commissioned Soldiers in the British Army (that's those of the rank of Private all the way up to Warrant Officer First Class) are issued with an eight digit number when they join. Those who are Commissioned Officers (from the rank of 2nd Lieutenant all the way up to Field Marshall) are issued with a five digit service number.

ANOTHER TRIPLE EXPOSURE

TRIPLE EXPOSURE

This photographic image features a British Army Combat Jacket (disruptive pattern mode) with Corporals chevrons (stripes). Then the silver metal dog tags. This technique was done in the camera, the camera was mounted securely onto a tripod and then with a 70-210mm large telephoto lens fitted to the camera the lens was zoomed in on three separate occasions to create the triple exposure.

Again this is another simple technique to use. However the more exposures you make the less the quality. I would say that three exposures is enough, other wise you start to lose clarity and quality in the photograph.

DOG TAGS AND COMPASS

The two items featured here are a Silva Compass and a set of Army dog tags (identification tags). This is a photo gram. Another darkroom technique. Under a red safe light the photographic paper is placed under the lens of the enlarger, then selected items are place at random upon the photographic paper, then in the normal way the paper is exposed to light through the enlarger's lens. The print is then processed as per any normal photographic print.

It's very similar to an X-Ray effect. Transparent items work best when experimenting with photo grams. There are some other examples of this technique on the 21 November 2009 post, on this blog.

TWO MEN IN A BOAT

Another rare colour photographic print on this mainly monochrome blog. It does look very much like a monochrome shot, but it's not. This is a silhouette shot (against the back drop of the sun shimmering on the water) of two lads in a boat. It was shot in the spring, from a beach near Dhekelia, Cyprus.

SHADOWS IN THE WAITING ROOM

A dog and it's human owner wait to see the duty vet, whilst shadows abound in this monochrome photographic print. Taken on Ilford HP5 film which was uprated to 3200 asa (available and natural light only) then developed in Ilford Microphen film developer.

SOLARISATION

The darkroom technique of solarisation is fairly simple and easy to do. It just needs a little bit of patience and experimentation. Made famous by the Photographer & Artist Man Ray. Select a negative, place in the enlarger, expose the photographic paper normally (under red darkroom safe lights). Then turn on the main room light for just a few seconds (to expose the photographic paper and print) Then develop, stop and fix as per a normal print. Then wash and dry the print as normal.

FULL MOON OVER THE HUMBER BRIDGE

At the start of a another New Year I thought for a change that I'd upload and post a colour photographic print of mine. This one needs no explanation. It's a full moon shining high above the Humber Bridge. If anything it's slightly over-exposed.

Taken on a Canon A1, with Fuji colour negative film. Camera mounted on a tripod and obviously a long exposure.

PAINTING WITH DEV AGAIN

Another example of painting with developer (perhaps that should be spraying with developer). It's a pretty simple technique to use. See the previous post for more details on this. A monochrome photographic print that was exposed under the enlarger (as normal) then placed into a tray where the developer was then sprayed randomly onto the print (as opposed to been fully immersed into the developing solution).

You perhaps have noticed the different effect the background and studio lighting has on the finished print, eg the darker the background the more pronounced the splatter of the developer is.

PAINTING WITH DEV

This studio portrait was taken when this young lady was only three years old. She is now a grown-up beautiful young lady with twin girls of her own. It's one of my great nieces by the way. It's a monochrome photographic print. It was given the correct timed exposure under the enlarger. Instead of then fully immersing the print in a tray of photographic developer (as you would normally do). I then mixed up the developer and water at the correct temperature.

Then this mixture was poured into a simple empty and cleaned plastic bottle (with a suction hose and a nozzle head trigger) and then the developer was sprayed randomly onto the photographic print. Then put it in a tray with stop bath solution and then a tray of fixer, and then washed thoroughly before drying.

MISLEADING

This is another studio still-life study. This one features a fictitious document of non-existent British Army units in an attempt to fool the Germans. Also featured is a set of British WWII campaign medals with red carnations completing the study. It's another monochrome print which was sepia toned and lit only by candles.

ARP 1939 ISSUE

This simply lit studio still-life features a genuine 1939 issue gas rattle. Very similar to the rattles that football fans used to use at matches in the 1940s to 1960s. Yellow tulips feature in this shot, which was only lit by candle light (no studio flash).

The sand represents the sand's of the D-Day Beaches. A monochrome photographic print which was sepia toned. You will find straight-forward monochrome (not toned) images of photographic prints from this series featured elsewhere on this blog.

REMEMBRANCE TRIPTYCH

A triptych (set or series of three) monochrome photographic sepia toned prints. From a series exploring the act of remembrance in relation to certain species of flowers.

The first (top image) features a genuine British Infantry Helmet from WWII, a replica cricket/clicker (if you have ever seen the film: "The Longest Day," then you will know what this item was used for. A single red rose lays upon the sand.

The middle or second image features a photograph of six British soldiers having just arrived back at Paragon Railway Station in Hull after being rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. The documents featured are copies of a diagram of German Beach Defences etc for the period June 1944. White carnation flowers complete the scene.

The bottom and final photograph in this selection of images features a set of medals that belonged to a British Royal Army Medical Corps Soldier (his unit was one of the first to enter and liberate Belsen Concentration Camp in WWII). A yellow tulip completes this still-life scene.

A letter of commendation to a British Soldier who fought for his country during the Second World War. This was kindly loaned to me by the widow of this soldier for my Remembrance Series Project, which was the final assignment for the Higher National Diploma (Design) Photography course I did at Bradford & Ilkley Community College, 1998-2001.

This project looked at the symbolism of certain species of flowers, in relation to the act of remembrance.
It is a monochrome photographic print at the 16 inch by 12 inch size, which was then sepia toned.

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN ?

A different perspective. No, actually the wording on the carriage/coach side reads: "The Route of the Flying Scotsman." As everyone knows the Flying Scotsman was a legendary steam train. Along with the likes of the "Mallard" and many similar iron clad giants that used to roar up and down the train lines of the United Kingdom. Before "Doctor Beeching's" axe fell on the railways back in the 1960s.

BLUE TONED

A series of monochrome photographic prints that have had the blue tone treatment. This is a simple two bath chemical solution where the fully developed print is first immersed in a chemical solution (the blue toner). Then put into a simple salt/water solution. Before been properly washed and then dried. This series of blue toned prints just show you how relatively simple it is to change the whole tonal range and depth of a monochrome photographic print. You will find straight-forward monochrome prints of some of the images featured here, displayed elsewhere upon this blog spot.

The images featured here where taken on Ilford HP5 Film (rated at 400asa) using only available light, eg natural light coming in through the windows and artificial light (from the indoor lights). The camera was mounted upon a tripod to enable slower shutter and exposure speeds.

PEBBLES IN A GROYNE

With the shifting sands and tides, these stones or large pebbles have become logded in the gap between these two pieces of wooden groyne. A groyne is a man-made wooden structure that the Victorians invented has part of sea defences on British beaches and shores.

The four lads who fell in Northern Ireland, I personally knew two of them and Major French was the Officer Commanding the Rifle Company that I was attached to.

During the period 1998 - 2002 I undertook a major photographic documentary project with the surviving members of the Hull & District Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association. I got to know all those listed above who survived the horrors of WWII to fade away in old age.

It just seemed very appropriate to upload the above photograph and mention all those who have served their country (some who fell, others who survived but eventually faded away).

'THE DOOR OPENS INTO HER FLAT AND INSTANTLY I'M OVERWHELMED BY THE FRAMED PHOTOS COVERING HER WALLS'

Squinting through the peephole, I'm startled by the sight of an eyeball pressed up to the other side. The giant retina then retreats and the form of a large man in a fleece jacket appears. 'Yes?' I call. 'You Ogden Chesnut?' the man says. 'Something like that.' I open the door. 'What can I do for you?'

He hands me a small box. 'From the old bird down below you.' I pierce the Sellotape and open it up. Inside is a Yashica 35mm film compact camera. I look up at him confused. 'That's very thoughtful of you. Are you her son?' I ask. 'Nah, mate. I'm just sorting her possessions. There ain't much. But she apparently wanted you to have that.'

'You mean she's...' 'Yeah, two nights ago.' Amid all the sirens and headlines and personal crises that occupy our days, my neighbour Rose quietly made her exit from the world with little fanfare. So good a neighbour was I, that I learned of her passing only days later .

'Does she have anyone to come by and collect her things?' I ask. 'Dunno, mate. We were just called to come and clear out the gaff so the new tenant can move in. Come down and have a look if there's anything else you want. I'll give you a good price.'

Charming Rose was quite outspoken, which is why it was so strange that I never saw her leave or people come to visit her. Her life was very insular within our building. I would see her every morning downstairs collecting post that was rarely anything more personal than a letter from the council. I often wondered if she had anyone in her life who cared about her, if she was lonely or perhaps running away, yet she always seemed happy.We traded pleasantries and regrets about the weather for most of our time together in the building, never delving beyond that. Only recently did she invite me in to her flat, but I had to decline as I was heading to Brighton that day. As I follow the fleeced man down the stairs I'm filled with a touch of regret.

The door opens into her flat and instantly I'm overwhelmed by the framed photos covering her walls. Every inch of space is used. There is no pattern or co-ordination in the frames. Instead, there is a timeline of Rose's life, charting husbands, boyfriends, colleagues, friends, more boyfriends, and then, as the photographs evolve into muted tones that finally burst into vibrant colour, Rose's hair washes into black & white and the group portraits grow fewer and fewer.

As I move towards the kitchen and the date stamps push towards the 21st century, people feature far less in Rose's photos, replaced by park landscapes, birds and street scenes. It strikes me seeing this amazing visual record of Rose's life that as we get older and the people close to us pass on or move away, and as we slow down and wander less, the only evidence we have that we lived a full and vibrant life are the pictures on our wall.

We've often heard of other cultures who do not allow themselves to be photographed for fear that the camera traps their soul. More interesting to me, however, is the reluctance of the Amish people to be photographed, believing the camera only indulges in vanity. Perhaps there is an inherent element of vanity in photography. For some, like Rose, it may be to show that we were here and we loved, and were loved back. For others it is to share our own personal view of the world. And for others yet it's to trap and keep a moment for ever because it pleases us.

There's nothing wrong with a little vanity, as long as we acknowledge it and know why it's there. I trap moments in time with my camera, probably because I largely failed to inspire the types of moments that adorn Rose's walls. 'I really must print more of my pictures,' I say, to no one in particular. 'Nah, mate,' says the fleeced man. Just lash 'em up on Facebook. Easier to get rid of when you go.' He then drops the framed photos into a bin bag.

A photographic exhibition by Magnum Photographer Donovan Wylie. Which looks at military architecture. He was embedded with a Canadian Army unit, which gave him the opportunity to photograph military outposts in the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. This project follows on from his documenting of the various Military Watch Towers that used to be located along the Ulster/Eire border.

Daniel Meadows: Early Photographic Works

Between 1971 and 1987 Daniel Meadows produced an astonishing documentary photographic record of urban society in Britain. Large and small monochrome prints of ordinary human beings. This is a wonderful documentary project, which gives you a glance into how we used to live, dress and furnish our houses. In my opinion an excellent exhibition.

A sepia toned print of some old warehouse doors. A old warehouse on the West Bank of the River Hull. There used to be many of these buildings, but heavy bombing during the Second World War, demolition and modernisation means there are only a handful left now. This building was demolished after an arson attack. There are now modern apartment buildings on this site.

PAINTING THE LINE

A Ship Yard Worker paints the white coloured line that separates the two distinctive colours of the RNLI Humber Lifeboat's hull. During bi-annual Hull and Keel cleaning and repainting in dry dock. Barnacles and other debris that accumulates below the waterline upon the hull and keel can affect the boats speed by up to two knots.

PADLOCKS - A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Here is another example of how toning can influence the mood and nature of a monochrome photographic print. The top image is a straight-forward photographic print (done in the darkroom). The second is the same print but this time it has been toned with a two bath sepia solution (again in the darkroom).

The sepia toned print reveals more detail (especially in the shadow areas) and I think warms up and increases the overall tonal range of the print. In other words it creates mood and depth.

DIFFERENT CONTRAST

This is basically a negative made from a positive using lith chemicals and lith paper in the darkroom. This is something that I have never really explored that much. Using lith paper and chemicals, then sepia, blue, or gold toning the finished prints reveals terrific results.

An autumnal day on the North East Coast. There are currently less than 54 piers in existence around the UK coastline. This particular Victorian Pier was first opened in 1869. It was refurbished after storm damage and reopened to the public in July 2001.

WHEN THE CAMERA DID NOT LIE

Colin Edwards recounts the tale of a chance discovery thanks to the authenticity of the photos produced by Kodakchrome film

IT IS just over a year since the last-ever roll of 35mm Kodakchrome film was produced. It was given to New York photographer Steve McCurry, who used it in his Nikon F6 for a travel documentary. That final roll ended a success story that began in 1935.

In May this year Michael Lyman, a photographer from Florida in the USA, bought a vintage slide projector in a charity shop. The projector had a drawer in the base that contained 80 cardboard-mounted Kodakchrome slides dating from the 1950s.

Because Lyman didn't know the people in the pictures, he invited his website visitors to seek any identifying clues. He wrote, 'Looking at these pictures is like stepping back to a time of post-war prosperity when America was at it's greatest, when people had well-paid jobs that allowed them to buy nice homes and big cars that had style and personality.'

Lyman continued 'They make me feel kind of sad, Photography is about capturing moments that are gone forever. The father was proud of his 1951 Chevrolet because it features in many of the pictures. He probably worked locally with enough wages for two vacations a year, to go bowling with his friends and to put food on the table for his family.'

'Within weeks, Lyman had sufficient responses to identify the town, the street, the house and even one of the girls pictured in her school uniform. Then, in a final breakthorough, he identified the family and now plans a trip to New York to return their photos. 'I want to tell them how the story unfolded and what a gift they have provided by allowing so many people to lift their spirits and to feel good about those days, 'he explained.

Ok, so maybe Michael Lyman saw those old Kodakchrome slides through rose-tinted spectacles where the past always looks wonderful. Even so, there is an amazing sense of authenticity in every shot.

If you have a problem associating authenticity with Kodakchrome's typically vibrant colours, remind yourself that these slides are the actual film that passed through the camera. They are from the days when the camera did not lie. Family photos were not manipulated on a computer beyond recognition. What you got was what you saw.

Many cassettes of long-lost Kodakchrome also passed through my Voiglander Vito C. Now my digital camera yields predictable results instantly, but in doing so it manages to remove some of the fun, most of the uncertainty and, I suspect all the future nostalgia.

PS LINCOLN CASTLE

The PS Lincoln Castle, moored up on Hessle Foreshore in the early 1980s. It served as a pub and restaurant before ending up moored alongside the National Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby. Sadly in 2010 it was broken up and destroyed despite a determined attempt by the Lincoln Castle Preservation Society to purchase it and restore it to it's former glory.

There were three main Paddle Steamers/Ferries sailing the River Humber in the years before the Bridge opened. From Victoria Pier in Hull across to New Holland Pier on the South Bank.

They were the PS Wingfield Castle, PS Tattershall Castle and the PS Lincoln Castle. All the Humber Ferries were withdrawn on the 24th June 1981 when the Humber Bridge opened.

For a change a little colour. This image is very relevant because it was recently the 30th anniversary of this iconic piece of engineering opening to the public. Back in July 1981. This particular shot was taken from the North Bank of the Humber, early one autumnal evening.

The Lives of Great Photographers is a compelling new exhibition drawn exclusively from the Museum's extensive and diverse Photography Collection.

Photographers featured include: Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot, Lady Clementina Hawarden, Alfred Stieglitz, George Davison, Fay Godwin, (Mary) Olive Edis, Andre Kertesz, Julia Margaret Cameron, Roger Fenton, Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Steichen, Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Capa, Weegee (Arthur Fellig), Larry Burrows, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Brassai (Gyula Halasz), Edith Tudor Hart (Edith Suschitzky), Bill Brandt and Tony Ray-Jones.

Some of the greats of photography, not to mention leading photo-journalists, fine-art, documentary and landscape photographers. With work spanning over two hundred years. There are also examples of some of the equipment these photographs used. A really excellent, interesting and educational exhibition that everyone should visit. A must for all photographers and photography students.

ARTIST ROOMS

On Tour is an inspired partnership with the Art Fund. Artist Rooms is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. It features the work of International Artists, working in a variety of art mediums, including: photography, video, painting and drawing. It features exhibitions at various venues throughout the UK commencing January 2011, and ending in the Spring of 2012.

Artists featured include: Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Diane Arbus,
Bill Viola, August Sander, Agnes Martin, Ed Ruscha, Richard Long,
Jeff Koons, Robert Therrien, Anselm Kiefer, Joseph Beuys, Alex Katz,
Cy Twombly, Vija Clemins, Jenny Holzer and Francesca Woodman.

Out of all these Artist's, two jump out at me. Because they are/were Photographers. August Sander and Diane Arbus. Add to this list Francesca Woodman.

I visited one such exhibition, by the late American Photographer Francesca Woodman. Who sadly committed suicide at the young age of just 22 years old. Before visiting this exhibition at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, I was unaware of her work. It reminded me of Nan Goldin's and Cindy Sherman's work.

Out of all these exhibitions I would personally recommend you visiting and seeing the one by the late, German Documentary Photographer - August Sander. He is one of my favourite Photographers. I like his simple, but dynamic monochrome environmental portraits.

TWITTER PHOTOGRAPHY RIGHTS ROW SURFACES

Fears have escalated that photos posted on Twitter will be sold to third parties without the photographer's consent - a danger exposed by Amateur Photographer five months ago. Twitpic - a firm that enables Twitter users to upload their photos - has been forced to issue a statement after controversially amending its terms of use.

Its revised terms state that Twitpic can 'distribute that content on twitpic.com and to our affiliated partners.' Although Twitpic has since made clear that users 'retain all copyrights' to their photos and videos, a spokesman for the intellectual Property Office told AP that, by agreeing to these terms and conditions, the photographer automatically grants Twitpic the right to distribute their images.

This means that, in practical terms, Twitpic users lose control of their photos. Concern intensified when it was announced that Twitpic had struck a deal with entertainment picture agency WENN, allowing it to sell on Twitter images. WENN's chief executive Lloyd Beiny stressed that the agreement with Twitpic only applies to pictures 'taken by' celebrities, and not images uploaded by the general public.

However WENN already has a similar agreement with Pixi - another firm enabling Twitter users to share their images. Speaking to AP in January, Beiny did not rule out selling on other types of Twitter images to wider media, such as pictures of breaking news story - whether taken by a celebrity or not.

Commenting on the Twitpic deal, he insisted 'We are not after
99.9% of pictures.'Referring to a report in the Metro newspaper, which claimed that Twitpic users lose their photographic rights, he told us: 'A lot of fuss is being made about nothing... they (Twitpic users) don't lose their rights, they own the copyright.'

Beiny declined to comment on WENN's current agreement with Pixi (since renamed Lockerz), which - as we revealed earlier this year - appears to give WENN the right to choose whether to use photos uploaded by members of the public, not just celebrities. In January, he told us: 'It (the agreement with Pixi) applies to all pictures, but unless it is something really exceptional it is unlikely we would be interested in anything other than a celebrity.'

Twitpic's revised terms state: 'You retain all ownership rights to Content uploaded to Twitpic. 'However, by submitting Content to Twitpic, you hereby grant Twitpic a worldwide non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transfereable license to use, reproduce...'

ARE YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS BRINGING ABOUT A FILM REVIVAL?

SEEING my latest copy of Amateur Photographer discreetly hidden under a pile of papers on my desk, my colleague quizzed me on my photographic interests. Explaining that I'd got a digital compact as well as what was left of my film gear, but that I'd regretted recently selling some of my film cameras, she told me that her daughter was at university studying photography.

'She won't use a digital camera, though,' she said, which I must admit I found quite astounding. I naturally assumed that most young people would regard film equipment as something from the Stone Age. Not a bit.

'Why's that? I asked. 'She doesn't like the complexities of modern cameras, and all the stuff you have to do on the computer. She'd rather wait and see what comes out and she loves the work in the darkroom'. She then went onto tell me how how her daughter visited a camera shop that specialised in old film cameras at bargain prices, and was always adding a new one to her growing collection.

In an age when I - somewhat naively, as it turned out - thought that most people under 30 would regard using film as something primitive, akin perhaps to using a typewriter instead of a laptop, my colleague's revelation came as a pleasant surprise. But why was I surprised I wondered? The answer was staring me in the face, because despite owning a very nice digital compact myself - which does take, it has to be said, some tremendous photographs - I just cannot use it in the same intutive way that I can with my all-manual Nikon SLR.

Despite the large LCD screen, in all but the dullest light I cannot always clearly see the image I've just taken, and it's only when I get home that I realise I've misjudged the exposure. If that's the case, then what's the point of digital? If I can't clearly see the image on the back of the camera then I might as well re-engage my brain and use a film camera.

Perhaps my colleague's young daughter has realised, we've lost the anticipation of photography - those most wonderful moments when we get back the pack of prints, the box of slides or the sheer satisfaction of seeing a selection of images taken on basic equipment, knowing we made the decision on the exposures, and maybe, just maybe, got them right.

Despite the never-ending proliferation of mobile phones with cameras, constant equipment upgrades, ever more complicated software and the somewhat soulless nature of digital photography, it is good to see that some young people are keeping the spirit of film photography alive. Good luck to them.

FACEBOOK USERS 'BREACH COPYRIGHT'

Facebook user's breach copyright and deprive professional photographers of revenue they are entitled to - by posting images plucked from the internet without permission, warn legal experts. Professional photography is 'creeping onto social network sites more and more with a growing number of people using professional shots as their profile picture, in shared wedding albums or even submitted as competition entries', claims In Focus, a photography insurance provider that works with photographers across the UK. Keith Arrowsmith, intellectual property and media partner at law firm Ralli, said 'I have been involved in cases where consumers have been faced with demands for hundreds of pounds of licence fees after unwittingly using unauthorised photos online. There is a certain amount of naivety regarding what can and can't be used without permission. The facts speak for themselves, however, and people get into trouble for using images they have found online without seeking prior permission'. Steve Hewlett, a director of In Focus, added: 'People mustn't presume they can do what they like with professional images; permission must be sought. You can't just take a photographer's work off their website or online proofing albums - it lowers the value of their work. Photographers are entitled to ask facebook users to remove their images and take legal action if they refuse'.

STRANGE EXPOSURE?

A photographer in the USA caught taking pictures of himself in a cemetery, without any clothes, was trying to photograph spirits. Robert T. Hurst 47, was recorded by security cameras set up to catch vandals at a cemetery in south Mississippi.

He said he was in the cemetery conducting his year-long hobby, orb photography, which involves capturing circles of light at night, some of which appear to be faces. Hurst claimed he was naked because the skin can be the best canvas for such photography. The photographer faced a charge of indecent exposure.
